Welcome to Queen Elizabeth School and Sports College

Headteacher

Welcome to the website of Queen Elizabeth School and Sports College. I hope as you read it you get a feel for our vibrant learning community and the student centred focus of all that we do.

As a school we are proud to serve the market town of Atherstone in North Warwickshire. Many of our students live in the town but a significant and growing number travel in from neighbouring villages. We are a medium sized school of around six hundred students which means we can offer a full curriculum whilst being small enough to know students as individuals.

Our specialism in sport is important to us and is a strength of our school. We use sport to motivate and engage young people and also for developing leadership qualities in our students. Last year we were highly commended as Youth Sport Trust secondary sports college of the year.

We have strong links with schools in China, Romania, Slovakia and France with regular opportunities for students to visit these and other countries. Our work on the global dimension as a route into exposing our students to a richer cultural heritage gained us the Warwickshire International School of the year award last year.

As one of the schools named in the Priority Schools Building Program we are going to be completely rebuilt soon. The fantastic new school is something Atherstone can be proud of.

Please contact me if you want to find out more about us. We will be happy to show you round.

  • With great enthusiasm, our Slovak Students arrived to spend 10 days in Atherstone from the 9th to the 20th April.  Our students baked some English cakes and made banners to welcome our guests and spent the day with them familiarising themselves with the bustling metropolis that is Atherstone.  Students had a full schedule ahead where they researched and investigated the impact of WW2 whilst taking in time in London, Kenilworth Castle and Cadbury World   We are thrilled to be able to host our Slovak students and give them a flavour of England.

  • Please note the Gifted and Talented Conference for Pupils and Parents will now take place on Tuesday 12 March 2013 from 5.15pm-6.00pm in the Upper School Hall.  (This date has been changed from Wednesday 5 February).  Please click on "Read More" to see flyer for further details.

  • At the recent Year 11 Parents Evening, there were some most encouraging results from the parental questionnaire. Particularly pleasing responses included 89% of respondents feeling that their youngster is not being bullied or harassed at school and 89% saying that the school provides appropriate homework. When asked whether or not parents felt they were kept well informed about how well their son or daughter was getting on, 92% felt that they agreed that they were well informed.  Perhaps the most pleasing responses of all was the fact that 95% of parents completing the questionnaire felt that their son or daughter was making good progress and a staggering 98% said that teaching in the school was good.  Only one parent did not say that the teaching was good and they ticked the “don’t know” box.

It is always useful to get feedback like this from parents and whilst we are fully aware that there are areas that we need to work on, it is also good to know that the vast majority of parents have a very positive perception of the school.   Quoted from a Parent at Year 11 Parents Evening:

"I would like to thank the staff for all the support and encouragement that has been shown to our son this year"
